Passion flowers can be pollinated by bees, birds and bats and are sometimes self pollinated. This had led to frequent morphological variation and the species is thought to have one of the highest diversity of leaf shape of any plants. Sometimes with entirely different leaves visible on the same plant. There are also about 550 species of flowers.

The name was given in the 15th century by Spanish missionaries as the various elements in the flower held symbols of crucifixion and the last days of Jesus. The leaves and roots were used for their medicinal properties by Native Americans and later adapted by European colonists.
