Among Bermudians, the famous Monstera Deliciosa is known as the Locust and Wild Honey plant. And as glorious and recognisable as the leaves are (monstera meaning monstrous on account of the size of the leaves), deliciosa is referring to the the honeycomb patterned fruit that is so popular. The unexpected taste is a combination of banana, pineapple and strawberry. Although the plant is introduced rather than endemic, and despite its extensive and often destructive root systems, monsteras have thankfully not taken over the island and are still a joy to discover in lush areas along the railway trail, and engulfs the famous ficus tree at the Bermuda Library in Hamilton.
